Our adventure to The Handmade Fair at Hampton Court in September began in earnest when we started loading our trusty old van on the Wednesday afternoon.
Our sighs of relief as we crammed the last of the boxes in and checked the weather forecast one last time were probably audible at Stonehenge. Thursday morning arrived and the weather was as promised – warm and sunny – so we set off with our regulation hi-viz jackets (very fetching!) and a large supply of snacks and water. We arrived...our tent was there, glistening in the sunshine. I wish I had filmed a time lapse of the super speedy unloading my colleague Tori and I performed, and whilst a little chaotic, we managed to get everything off the van and after several hours, it began to take shape.
On Friday morning, with the DuoBoots Team now complete, Jemma and Aimee provided the finishing touches and visual merchandising to complete our preparations. As it was Tori’s birthday...I took her for breakfast at a fabulous Teddington deli, Gosia’s...will be popping back there at any opportunity, I can assure you!
Zipping over to Hampton Court Green for opening, we were ready! On the dot of 9.30, the gates released crowds of excited crafters, workshoppers, handmade enthusiasts and Kirstie fans into the showground. The atmosphere was buzzing and we introduced DuoBoots to lots of ladies who thought they’d never find boots to fit, treated dozens to an expert fitting and advised numerous on the Autumn/Winter ’18 collection we’d taken to show them.
On Saturday morning, the lady herself paid us a visit. She was so lovely and spent quite some time asking about our boots and feeling the quality of the leathers and suedes. You are welcome anytime, Ms Allsop!
By the end of Sunday we were tired but happy. We’d had lots of laughs and a few tears... “I’m 48 and have never had a pair of knee high boots before. Thank you so much. You’ve made my day.”
We’d learned a lot, taken orders, fitted lots of happy customers, introduced DuoBoots to a whole new audience and managed to try most of the delicacies on the food stands and sampled gin, Prosecco and rum. Happy days. Thank you to all who helped and all who came to see us. We loved it all.
